Castle Picturesque Swiss Village in Ependes

CHF 8,000,000

Reference: SWI090028

This magnificant castle is situated in Ependes, close to the town of Fribourg, a picturesque university town.

The castle was built in 1532 (see further details on the history of the building below) and is one of the few castles available for purchase in Switzerland. The property is 420sq m over five floors and includes five en-suite bedrooms, library, wine cellar, office and large garden and swimming pool, fitness area, solarium and sauna, in addition to the generous double reception and kitchen areas. Additionally, there is a large separate house, matching the overall ancient style which is perfect for an expanded office, seperate living accommodation for staff, relatives or as a guest house. The property is surrounded by a stone wall which provides a high degree of privacy. A large garden (approx. 8,000sqm - 2 acres) has a large variety of trees and is beautifully landscaped with flowerbeds and hedges. The large swimming pool has a unique underground space which has a sauna, solarium and fitness room. The highway to Lausanne (30 mins), Geneva Airport (1 hour) or Bern (45 mins) is only 6 km away and a small airport with helicopter service is 5 km away. The ski resorts of Gstaad, Zermatt and Verbier are approx. 1-2 hours away. For horse lovers, Avenches with its national stud and the longest trotting course in Europe is 20 km away. History The château d’Ependes dates back to 1532 when it was built by Jean de Lanther. In 1644 the Chateau was sold to a French colonel and in 1661 the property was sold to the Amman family which owned it until 1972 when the current owners purchased the castle.

The owners renovated the whole property between 1976 and 1978 by restoring the façade and the roof; rooms were enlarged and after insulation work was completed, the original ceilings and beams were once again put back in place. The old annex was also transformed, adding separate rooms with terraces.
